New Flood Web Pages Go Live

A new online guide to flooding has been launched by Gloucestershire County Council to help people access the information they need. Gloucestershire County Council has updated and revamped the flood information pages on its website. The 'mini site' holds a wealth of information for residents who have been affected by, or are at risk from, flooding. The web pages, which can be found at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/flooding <http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/flooding>, have information and advice on a variety of topics including flood defences, insurance advice and business continuity planning.
They also include links to a variety of other sources of help and further information.
Interesting additional features include a section on 'Who does what' which explains the roles and responsibilities of the different agencies involved in flood risk management.

Beat the Parking problems around Oxstalls - and make money!

Local resident Rebecca, a www.mylonglevens.co.uk reader, has told us about how she is helping to alleviate some of the parking problems around the Oxstalls Campus by renting out her driveway. Not only does it help congestion in the area, but she gets a small fee each time space is used.  If you think about it, it may also be a way for residents along Estcourt Road to make a couple of quid on match days.  To find out more about this novel and ingenious idea, visit www.parkatmyhouse.com.  Thanks to Rebecca for letting us know about this initiative.

Blooming Marvellous!!!

We have just been informed that Longlevens has won a GOLD certificate for Gloucester In Bloom.  Sandra Drew of the local Longlevens Neighbourhood Partnership said "This was all down to the hard work and commitment of Mary Humphris and Andrea Print who are committee members of the Longlevens Neighbourhood Partnership as well as Dennis Lyes (Churchwarden and Ron Pring.

This is the first time Longlevens has entered this competition and to receive a GOLD first time is a credit to Andrea and Mary so thanks to them for their hard work on this project.
The judges apparently were particularly impressed with the Church gardens.

More Development Threatens Further Flooding - Sign the Petition Now!

Thursday 22 May 2008

Plans on the Centre Severn website outline the development of this area in Gloucester for mixed use/employment. At one time, it was planned to be a nature reserve, but now this area is to be built on. The Horsebere brook runs right through this site. The site flooded in the Summer Floods 07. This helped to ease the flooding in Longlevens. Building on this site will mean less infiltration of water, hence making problems even worse in Longlevens, especially Cypress Gardens. The water has to go somewhere! It is unfair on the residents who have not been consulted. A nature reserve would improve the situation dramatically, also improving wildlife. Considering the council tax was raised in Gloucester to provide extra flood protection and prevention, this plan is completely counter-intuitive. The recent floods affected many residents dearly and we must show our concern and stop any flooding in the future.

Di Philips Says "Thank You"

Monday 19 May 2008

Many thanks to the 1537 Longlevens residents who voted for me in the recent City Council Election. It was good to meet so many friends, old and new, who made me feel very welcome.  Although I was not elected this time I am still happy to help any Longlevens resident in any way I can if you have need of my support.  I have never had a routine date for a surgery, prefering to hear from you when you have a problem rather than you having to wait for a pre-set time and place.  Spotlight always gives my contact details and those of the other members of the team.  I can be contacted by:-
Tel: (01452) 528166    Fax: (01452) 540814    e mail: di.phillips@blueyonder.co.uk

Thank you once again,

Di Phillips

Watch out for bougus charity collectors

Wednesday 23 April 2008

Thanks to a reader who has tipped me off that a warning has been issued by Trading Standards officers. Apparently, leaflets have been pushed through doors in Longlevens and Elmbridge saying that they are collecting donations for charity when, in fact, the collectors are from a company.

Monday 14 April 2008

New two-tier fines for illegal parking in Longlevens

Tuesday 1 April 2008

From this week, the City Council who took on responsibility for parking enforcement last November now have the choice of charging £50 or £70 depending on the seriousness of the infringement.  Parking on single or double yellow lines will attract the top payment but in both cases, the amount will be reduced by half if paid within 14 days.

Interesting that in last month's poll, illegal parking was the biggest complaint from those who voted, with 34% listing it as their top priority. Just another way to raise revenue?  I might have thought so but I've never seen anyone enforcing the regulations anyway!  Have your say in the Forum.

Roadworks and Travel disruption

Tuesday 1 April 2008

Watch out for temporary traffic lights on the Oxstalls Lane & Cheltenham Road junction for power cable laying.

Also, big delays are predicted as the County Council starts road works on the A40 between Highnam and Over, starting on 12th May.  If you use this route to get to/from work, you can expect significant problems, so much so that employers are being asked to consider more flexible hours for their staff. See Gloucestershire Highways for more info.

Forthcoming Roadworks & Speed Cameras

Sunday 3 March 2008

Did you know Longford Lane will be closed for 2 weeks from 7th April for resurfacing by Gloucestershire Highways? It wil be closed from Brionne Way to Tewkesbury Road which can only add to the normal traffic congestion.

And on top of that, the police will be doing a Reduce Your Speed campaign in Longlevens over the next few weeks armed with speed cameras...you have been warned!

Message of Support from Paul James, Longlevens City Councillor

Monday 25 February 2008

I am delighted to write for http://www.mylonglevens.co.uk/ and I very much welcome the initiative of creating this new community website.

Longlevens has all the hallmarks of a strong community - a good range of local shops, active churches and voluntary groups, well-patronised local pubs, a library, a doctors' surgery, a post office and lots of friendly people!

paul james longlevens councillorLast year's flooding in Longlevens demonstrated the tremendous community spirit that exists in the area. People were frantically sand-bagging properties, rescuing stranded residents from their homes, helping each other clean up after the floodwater had hit and checking on vulnerable members of our community. I'm tremendously proud of the way in which people in Longlevens, and across the city, reacted in these difficult circumstances.

The sense of community has been underlined in recent weeks by the creation of the Longlevens Neighbourhood Partnership. The Partnership brings together residents, councillors and agencies working in the area to deal with issues of local concern. A meeting in a packed Longlevens Junior School hall saw Kelly Bartlett, a well-known local resident due to her campaigning post-flooding, elected as the Chair.

An impressive number of people put their names forward to be on the Co-ordination Group, showing real commitment from residents to build a stronger community.

This website shares the same objective as the Neighbourhood Partnership - to build community spirit in Longlevens and make it an even better place to live. I would urge you to check it regularly for the latest local news and to post your own pieces of community information onto the site whenever you can.

Best wishes

Paul James

City Councillor for Longlevens and Leader of Gloucester City Council
